Bangalore India – Places to Eat and Dishes to Try

Everyone knows Bengaluru (formerly Bangalore) as the city that changed the IT scene in India. But do you know that Bangalore also happens to be the city as diverse in its cuisine as it is in its character?

From mangalore buns to vada pav and from beer and nachos to apple pie – Bangalore has something to appeal to everyone’s taste buds. Whether you are a traveller or have been living there for months or years, Bangalore never lets you down as far as food is concerned.

When we visited Bangalore, one of the things that used to be our daily practice was paying a visit to some of the best food streets there.

Street Food and Markets

We’ll start with a bit of must-have street food in the city. Obviously you can find people selling street food any- and everywhere. But that’s not where you should be heading to! When you’re in Bangalore, your first destination for street food should be V V Puram Food Street or Khau Galli where you’ll get the most delectable masala dosa, or South India cuisine. Not only that, this 400 m food street is filled with dozens of food stalls selling the most sumptuous dishes. As for how much you’ll have to spend – calculate around INR 150 per person; well, obviously depending upon your appetite!

Another one of our favourite places for street food in Bangalore has to be the Johnson Market, which sells some of the best meat in the market. If you’re a meat lover, try seekh kebabs and chicken and/or mutton biryani. Expect to spend anywhere between INR 250-300 for a meal for two at Johnson Market.

The best thing we like about the Food Street and Johnson Market is that there is an incredibly wide choice of food on offer. Satisfaction guaranteed!

Fine Dining

One thing that always leaves us and our friends at crossroads about Bangalore dining scene is that we are so spoilt for choice. Now speaking of fine dining, there’s no dearth of options available for you. If you’d like to gorge on Italian or European cuisine, we’d highly recommend Alto Vino (Bengaluru Marriott Hotel) and Bene (Sheraton Bengaluru Hotel). The best venues for Indian cuisine are K & K (ITC Gardenia Hotel) and Ssaffron (Palace Road). Average meal for two will cost you anywhere between INR 2500 and INR 3500 depending upon whether you order drinks to go along.

Cafes and Coffee Houses

When we talk about cafes, we simply can’t ignore the very quaint Dyu Art Café in Koramangala. We remember the last we ate there. We were a company of friends and called in for our afternoon tea. We ended up having a full meal, enjoying the tender flavours of honey glazed chicken winglets, cheese fritters and masala chai in a light drizzle. It was an absolute heaven! A meal for two at a café like this will cost you around INR 700-800, which is reasonable enough for a lovely, artsy place like that.

Another not-to-be-missed café is The Hole in the Wall Café in Koramangala itself. This place is especially famous for its extensive breakfast menu. Due to its great popularity, it is always a hard task to find an empty table, what in fact also makes it a must-visit café. While you’re there, just give their Farmer’s or American breakfast a try. You’ll relish every bit of it – we guarantee.
