Udon Thani Hotels, Guesthouses and Resorts
There are so many accommodation options in Udon Thani that there’s no really need of reservation especially if you want to avoid using public transport and wish to stay around Soi Sampantamit, close to the bus and the train station. The whole area is well known for being the most touristic part of town, with lots of bars, restaurants and hotels aiming mainly at the Western travellers. If this is what you’re looking for you can simply walk around when you get off the bus; many of the cheapest guesthouses cannot be booked in advance and even if advanced booking is possible, walk-in rates are usually better than the online ones.
If you’re looking for a quieter and more authentic experience, several other options can be found scattered around town. In this very case it might be a good idea to book in advance or at least to choose the place before you get to town, since you will need a taxi or a tuk-tuk to get there from the bus terminal.
If you’re arriving to Udon Thani by plane, many of the hotels will offer you a free pick up service from the airport if you have a reservation with them.
Budget
Several backpacker style options are available within a walking distance from Soi Sampantamit. Our choice goes to Thai Chaba Backpackers (470/5 Adunlayadet road). Despite being still near to everything, it is located on a side street which feel far less chaotic and close to the park overlooking a pond – isn’t it s perfect place for an early morning stroll?
The place itself is small and relaxed with the maximum capacity of 20 people and the owner doing everything she can to make customers feel at home. The air-con dormitories can host only four or six people and are never overcrowded. Choose the one with the futon beds instead of the bunk ones; they’re more comfortable and the room is nicer. Shared bathrooms are big and always clean, with hot shower if you need it. They also have a common kitchen where you can cook your breakfast; they provide eggs, toast and jam for free.
Double rooms with shared bathrooms are also available; they’re nice, spacious and well decorated. Rates vary from THB250 for a bed in a dorm to THB450 for a private double room with an air-con (THB350 with fan). If you’re on a budget you’ll hardly find anything better than this place.
Right in the centre of the Westerners’ area, Top Mansion (35/3, Samphanthamit Rd) offers clean, modern and comfortable double rooms with air-cons and private bathrooms at an affordable price (THB500). It is a really good value for the money and extremely convenient for the bus station, Central Plaza and all the bars and restaurants. If you don’t mind a bit of noise at night and you want to be close to everything this is the place for you.
Mid-Range
Close to the beautiful Nong Prajak Public Park, Jamjuree Home (10/9 Benjant Rd) is a true home away from home experience. The venue occupies a three storey building with only 4 rooms for the guests and a lot of common areas to meet other travellers or the owners who live on the 1st floor. The rooms are big and beautifully decorated, each one in a different style. Free breakfast is included and Wi-Fi is working throughout the whole property. Add free use of bicycles – you’ll probably need one to while away a lazy afternoon in the park (which is just 10 minute walking from the place). Rates are THB1000 for the standard room and THB1300 for the studio-type room with a private living room attached.
