Trang Sights, POI and Things to Do
Trang is under the radar and off the beaten path. The few travellers that pass through are more in favour of heading to the unspoiled islands and are unaware of the bounties that Trang has to offer. Trang has a magnificent coastline that stretches almost 200 km. Despite playing a key role in facilitating trade and communications to Thailand’s southern commercial hub of Nakhon Si Thammarat, its province is still unfrequented by tourists.
Though not as well known as neighbouring province Krabi, Trang does not lack in natural beauty or in its amazing cultural heritage. The coast is lined by long, enchanting beaches and the water dotted with numerous islands, while the interior is full of forest, wildlife, and waterfalls.
Trang markets
A highlight of any visit to Trang is certainly the markets. It houses two, Ta Klang Market and the Municipal Market, both selling fresh products and by their numerous awards, are known to be the cleanest fresh markets in Thailand. Meandering your way through these gives a wonderful look into the daily lives of the locals.
Rubber Tree monument
Trang’s claim to fame is the first rubber tree ever planted in Thailand. Located on the road that leads to Kantang, the tree represents the first group of rubber trees that Phraya Ratsadanupradit planted, revolutionizing the industry in southern Thailand. Located 1 km out of the city on the road to Phatthalung is a monument dedicated to him.
Trang temples
Need a spiritual fix? Temple lovers, be sure to check out Tham Phraya Phichai/Tham Phra Phut. Inside a cave is a large reclining Buddha, along with a standing one decorated in the style of a regal southern Thailand dancer. Found at this location is also personal belongings such as ceramics, lacquerware and old pottery, of upper-class people, but the origin and temple’s history are shrouded in mystery.
Trang Aquarium
Marine life aficionados head to the Rajamangkala Aquarium located about 30 km from Trang City. Inside the Fishery Faculty at the Rajamangkala Institute of Technology, the aquarium has both freshwater and marine fish, amphibians and a realistic model of a mangrove forest. Open daily during official hours, admission is THB50.
Nature attractions in Trang
Nature lovers can rejoice as there is plenty of natural wonders both in Trang City and its surrounding province. Inside the city is Sa Kaphang Surin, a naturally occurring pool covering around 80,000 square meters and surrounded by a public park. A concrete bridge spans the water and connects three beautiful pavilions, perfect for a relaxing stroll.
Outside of Trang is the newer tourist destination for those interested in nature and flora, the Peninsular Botanic Garden (Thung Khai). The park features a tourist service center, botanical garden, herbal garden, botanical library, and a plant museum. Numerous trails span throughout the jungle but the highlight is the Canopy Walkway, a 175-meter long walking trail the extends over three levels of height (10, 15, 18 meters) and across five boardwalks.
Waterfalls and caves in Trang
Trang’s forests also have an abundance of waterfalls. A popular spot among locals is Namtok Phrai Sawan, a medium-sized waterfall with 17 sub-levels and three major cascades. On-site are rubber boats ready to cruise visitors 5 km down the river. An ideal location for a picnic, swim and some relaxation.
Various caves dot the countryside such as Tham Le Khao Kop Cave. A canal flows from Banthat Mountain and meets the mountainous landscape of Khao Kop where it separates into three streams. One stream flows through a tunnel in the hill creating an amazing natural wonder explored by an impressive boat journey where visitors must lie flat in order for the boat to exit. The boat cost THB200 for 6 people.
Diving and snorkelling in Trang
Though not as known to tourists, Trang’s stunning waters allow for some first class diving and snorkelling. Declared a national marine park in 1981, Had Chao Mai includes aquatic zones scattered with many islands. The area typically closes from June till the end of September for safety and environmental reasons.
Trang is an eye-opener for those who believe Thailand is nothing but well-travelled roads. With plenty of hidden gems and a paradise for food and nature lovers, there is sure to be something to satisfy any palate.
