Sukhothai Hotels, Guesthouses and Resorts
Sukhothai is split into two main areas, Old Sukhothai and New Sukhothai, though we found out that even the new isn’t really that new at all with old wooden houses and temples lining lanes and streets in certain areas.
There are pros and cons to each area with the main factor staying in the Old Sukhothai is that you are very close to the historical park and the main factor for the New Sukhothai is that there is generally more going on in the sense of food options basically. The new part has a better range of budget and midrange options compared to the old one but the Old Sukhothai has more upscale accommodation, so where to stay just depends entirely on what you are looking for.
New Sukhothai – budget
There are a number of cheap places to stay at to choose from in the new city but we particularly recommend 4T Guesthouse, Sila Resort and TR Guesthouse.
4T Guesthouse has been built in a bungalow type way and includes a pool, a restaurant (well, rather a mediocre one, but still) and is set in a quiet setting with the cheapest rooms starting roughly from THB300. For THB600 you have a huge family bungalow with one king-size and one ordinary bed with en-suit bathroom and a very spacious terrace – it is probably the best deal ever you can find for this money not only in Sukhothai but in the whole Thailand!
Sila Resort is just a stone’s throw away from the bus station in New Sukhothai and you can get free pick up from and to the bus station. They also provide free transportation to the old city and the rooms are clean and have air-con. There is also a restaurant at the resort and they have free bikes to use with the price starting from THB230.
We included TR Guesthouse as we knew some people staying there and they said that you can get air-con rooms with private showers and bathrooms, free WIFI and have motorbikes for rent. The ultra friendly staff give out excellent advice and sort your daily needs and the price starts from THB300.
For a bit more – THB450 – you can get a simple wooden bungalow at Ban Thai Guesthouse which has a winning location close to the night market and just off Route 12 to the Old City but in a Quiet soi. They also have a primitive kids’ playground which may be of interest for those travelling with the little ones.
If you want ultra cheap places, try the New City Guesthouse and Le Sukhothai, which offer rooms for less than THB300.
New Sukhothai – mid-range
For midrange options in the new city, we advise Lotus Village, which is found right in the heart of the new area. All of the rooms are spacious and clean with air con, have balconies and are surrounded by elegant gardens and ponds. The friendly owners can sort out trips and transportation for you with prices starting from THB800.
Hotel Sawasdipong is another good choice in New Sukhothai as it has air con rooms, bar fridges, TVs and has a restaurant and the THB500 price tag also includes breakfast for two.
New Sukhothai – top end
If you want to stay away from the noise and dust of New Sukhothai, consider Mountain View Guesthouse, which offers clean and spacious rooms, a swimming pool and breakfast for around THB1000-1300. It is located close to the Southern zone of the historical park in a very quiet area.
Old Sukhothai – budget
If you are looking for a cheap place to stay in the old part then really your only option is Old City Guesthouse but don’t expect to be blown away as it is very simple with fans, beds and warm water with prices starting at THB200.
Old Sukhothai – mid-range
There are a good amount of mid range places with our favourites being Thai Thai Sukhothai Guesthouse, which has classy bungalow-styled guesthouses with air con and garden views and is only a few minutes away from restaurants and the historical park.
Other places we suggest in this bracket include Vieng Tawan Guesthouse for around THB700, the Scent of Sukhothai for THB1200 and the Orchid Hibiscus Guesthouse for THB1000.
Old Sukhothai – Top end
There are also some luxury hotels to select from and we give Legendha Resort the nod for being one of the best. The villas have been built in traditional Thai-style with the bigger buildings mimicking 19th century Thai palaces. All rooms are air-con, large and clean and include beautiful décor, a TV, a bar fridge and WIFI. The resort is a winner for the romantic couples as there is a large saltwater swimming pool, Jacuzzi, Thai massage and a restaurant. Also worth mentioning is that there are daily Thai traditional dancing rehearsals at the place and the guests are welcome to attend for free. Prices start around THB2000.
There are other luxury places to check out like Sukhothai Treasure Resort and Tharaburi Resort.
