Bangkok and Sukhothai Become Two New UNESCO Creative Cities

UNESCO has named Bangkok and Sukhothai among 66 new Creative Cities. Thus the total number of UNESCO Creative Cities in Thailand reached four – earlier Chiang Mai and Phuket also received this status.

The UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) project was launched in 2004. The aim of the project is to promote cooperation among cities that rely on creativity as a major factor in their sustainable urban development, encouraging tourism and ensuring cultural vibrance. With the most recent inclusions, the UNESCO Creative Cities Network now counts a total of 246 cities.

Each city from the list of Creative Cities is mentioned in one of the categories in which it stands out. E.g. Phuket was named a ‘Creative City of Gastronomy’ in 2015; Chiang Mai – a ‘Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art’ in 2017. Bangkok was chosen for its design endeavours while Sukhothai is also a ‘Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art’.

Speaking on the occasion of designating two more Thai destinations as 'Creative Cities', Governor of Tourism Association of Thailand (TAT) Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn said, “Next year, TAT will continue to focus on promoting ‘responsible tourism’ putting sustainability front and centre in line with UNESCO sustainable development goals. We want to ensure that Thailand’s tourism sector continues to grow from strength to strength as the TAT champions environmental sustainability and cultural vibrancy that positions Thailand as a sustainable destination for many generations to come.”
