Koh Phayam Beaches
Koh Phayam is surrounded by lovely coves and inlets which make it ideal for a relaxing beach break. There is everything from long stretches of sand to little rocky outcrops and it is up to you to explore the island to see which beach takes your fancy. The changing tides and somewhat numerous jellyfish may make the sea a little more unpleasant to actually swim in, but with the breeze coming in off the water you’ll happily be able to spend hours unwinding on the shore.
Ao Yai, the most developed beach
If you want a beach with plenty of amenities, head to Ao Yai which has plenty going on. It is clear to see why this is known as Long Beach, with the golden sand stretching out in front of you for miles.
The southern section is home to a number of resorts so is perfect if you are looking for a bit of beach nightlife.
During the day, Ao Yai is a great place to hire boogie boards or surf boards and enjoy some of Thailand’s rare waves. There is also the occasional football match going on along the beach and we’re sure the players wouldn’t mind a couple more people getting involved!
Ao Mae Mai, a quiet escape
For something a little quieter, perhaps choose Ao Mae Mai on Koh Phayam’s north east coast. This stretch of beach is a bit more traditional and it backed by stilt houses and has longtail boasts perched on the water’s edge. As it lies on the east coast, it can be a great spot to get up and watch the sun rise. Why not enjoy a bit of yoga while it rises to start your day off nicely?
Ao Khao Kwai, the best choice for families
Buffalo Beach, or Ao Khao Kwai, is another great option. It offers some of the lively spirit of Ao Yai, but, as it is split into two sections, you’re likely to be able to find yourself a secluded spot to relax.
The swimming is good at both beaches during high tide and there isn’t much of a swell which makes it perfect for children or those who aren’t the most confident swimmers. If you prefer a bit of action, choose the northern part of Ao Khao Kwai as it is backed by resort bars and restaurants. The southern end, on the other hand, has no bars so is better for those looking for some peace and quiet.
Which beach on Koh Phayam to choose?
Each beach has its pros and cons and every traveller is looking for something a little different. If you’re coming for a day trip or are staying close to the arrival pier, Ao Mook is lovely. Ao Ko Kyu is a bit more difficult to get to, but when you do arrive at this secluded spot on Koh Phayam’s south east coast, you will be rewarded by clear waters and total isolation. Ao Kwang Peeb sits on the northern tip of the island and is known by many as Monkey Island. When you arrive it’s clear to see why – watch out for your snacks and monkeys will sneakily swing down from the trees to help themselves to your bags! It is a pretty beach though, so is worth exploring, even if you don’t stay for some lunch!
If you’re happy to pack yourself some snacks and plenty of water, there are coves all over the island that are begging to be explored. Hire a motorbike from one of the resorts and discover the island at your leisure.
