Two airlines, one from Cambodia and the other from China, has announced the launch of new direct air routes between Phnom Penh and destinations in China.

Cambodia Airways, a full-service airline based in Phnom Penh, adds two new routes to its portofolio. Effective from January, 2, it will fly from Phnom Penh to Shenzhen, in southeastern China, and to Chengdu, the capital of southwestern China’s Sichuan province. Both Chinese cities are important transportation hubs.

It will be the first regular service to Chengdu which is currently served by seasonal charter flights performed by JC International Airlines and Spring Airlines and the second regular service to Shenzhen after China Southern Airlines. Seasonal charter flights between Shenzhen and Phnom Penh are offered by Shenzhen Airlines and Spring Airlines, too.

The Chinese-owned JC International Airlines will start flying between Phnom Penh and Guiyang, the capital of China's southwestern Guizhou province, on a regular bases from December, 29. The airline already performs flights between these two destinations seasonally.

Weekly, Cambodian airports handle about 500 flights to and from destinations in China. The two countries are connected by direct flights operated by 19 airlines, 14 of which are Chinese-based and the rest are local airlines.
