As soon as the second terminal becomes fully operational, the old terminal will get a major facelift. Construction of the third 620 million baht passenger terminal is also on pipe: it will start as soon as the winner of the bids for the U-Tapao Airport and Eastern Airport City Development Project is determined. The first stage of the construction of the third terminal is expected to be completed by 2024. The addition of one more terminal will raise the airport's passenger capacity to 12 million people.
The U-Tapao airport started to operate commercial flights in 2015 handling 177,000 passengers during the first year. At the moment 15 airlines (14 passenger airlines and one cargo airline) use the airport operating 33 domestic and international routes. U-Tapao is eyed as a third major destination for airlines after two Bangkok's airports, Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang which are both functioning beyong their capacity. The long-waited for railway link is expected to link the three airports within three years.
