October Festivals in India Not to Miss

October is a big month for the festival calendar in India. Here are some of the most prominent celebrations not to miss if you happen to be in India during this period.

Ramnagar Ramlila
Ramlila is a folk re-enactment of the life of Rama. The oldest tradition of Ramlila originates from Ramnagar, Varanasi.
When: This year's Ramlila lasts till October 13
Where: Ramnagar, on the banks of the Ganga River opposite Varanasi

Navaratri
The autumn Navaratri is mostly observed in the honour of the divine feminine Devi, or Durga. The nine-days celebrations will continue till October, 9.

Kabin Yatra
This is where you should head for in you happen to be in Jodhpur, Jaisalmer or Bikaner in Rajasthan between today and October, 6. A folk music caravan-like fest is an amazing experience for buffs of Sufi and Bhakti music. 

Durga Puja
West Bengal, Assam, Bihar and Odisha are where this festival honouring the goddess Durga is at its best. The old tradition of the festival possibly dates back to the 14th century.

Diwali
The famous festival of lights celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and even Buddhists lasts from 4 to 5 days with the main day being October, 27 this time (October, 26 in Southern India). One of the most popular festivals in Hinduism celebrates "victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance."
