Five New National Parks Added in Thailand in 2016–2019

Creation of new national parks goes in line with Thailand’s 20-year National Strategic Plan, that is set to increase the forest area in the country to 55% by 2037.

Currently there are 133 national parks in Thailand. Khao Yai National park is the country’s first NP established in 1962. Tham Sa Koen National Park in Nan is the newest park designated recently.

The five new national parks of Thailand are:

1. Namtok Chet Sao Noi National Park in Saraburi and in Nakhon Ratchasima provinces
The Park covers an area of 40.89 square kilometres and is home to a picturesque waterfall previously known as Ban Sao Noi.

2. Khun Sathan National Park in Nan provinces
The 1,630 metre Doi Khon Sathan is a peak within Doi Phrae Mueang mountain ridge that stretches between Phrae and Nan provinces.

3. Mae Takhrai National Park in Chiang Mai and Lamphun
Some of the main tributaries of the Ping River originate in the park which also offers scenic vies, hot springs and cliffs.

4. Than Sadet-Ko Phangan National Park on Koh Phangan, Suratthani province
This 45 sq km park protects the wilderness area of Koh Phangan located on the slopes of the rugged and steep mountain range.

5. Doi Chong National Park in Lamphun province
It is a mountainous area covered with deciduous forests.
