El Nido Beaches to Rehab without Closure

Beaches of El Nido, Palawan infected with a high level of fecal coliform and needing urgent rehabilitation can be improved without closure, the Department of Tourism (DOT) confirmed last week.

Earlier, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) called DOT and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to undertake measures for cleaning El Nido's Bacuit Bay and Corong-Corong Outfall to prevent possible spread of bacterial infection among tourists and locals. At least 3.4 million most probable number/ 100 milligrams on fecal coliform level was found in the water samples taken from one of the outfalls in Corong-Corong and Bacuit Bay.

While the complete report is still expected, the DOT believes a rehabilitation without closure is the most viable recommendation.

Known for white-sand beaches, coral reefs and limestone cliffs, El Nido is the gateway to the Bacuit archipelago. The beautiful Bacuit Bay is dotted with islands and islets, most of which are inhabited. It is famous for highly clear waters and rich marine life with dugons, turtles, manta rays spotted regularly. Over 30 dive sites attract underwater world enthusiasts from across the globe.
