Bangkok Airways Eyes Launching Bangkok–Bagan Route

Bagan, Myanmar, that has recently received a UNESCO World’s Heritage Site status, may soon be connected by a direct air route to Bangkok, Thailand’s capital.

BangkokAirways, a regional airline based in Thailand, expressed interest in opening adirect route between the Thai capital and the historical city of Bagan inMyanmar. 

Currently,Bagan is served by Nyaung U Airport. The airport does not have aninternational status and receives domestic flights from Heho, Yangon, Mandalay,Kengtung, Myitkyina, Tachilek, Thandwe and Naypyidaw only. 

The airlineis also interested in introducing direct flights to Heho in Shan state (forInle Lake) and Myeik in Tanintharyi Region. Neither of these two airports cancurrently handle international flights.  

BangkokAirways already operates direct flights from Bangkok to Yangon, Mandalay andNaypyidaw. The airline also serves two direct routes from Chiang Mai: to Yangonand Mandalay

There is 31 airports in Myanmar out of which only three are international airports:Yangon, Mandalay and Naypyidaw. Plans to upgrade 14 of the bunch equipping themwith customs, immigration and quarantine facilities are in the pipeline but itis yet unclear when any of these airports will be able to receive flights fromabroad.
