Myanmar to Designate Five Areas as National Geology Parks

Myanmar to designate five areas in Mandalay Region, Shan State, Kachin State, Kayin State, and Sagaing Region as national geology parks.

The five areas are Popa Mountain in Mandalay, Inn Daw Gyi Lake in Kachin, Inle Lake in southern Shan, Twin Taung in Sagaing, and Mount Zwegabin in Kayin. Newly formed geology parks are the areas of great geological heritage and importance. They feature unique geological phenomena, ancient structures, fossils, or contain artefacts connected to ancient religious beliefs and the lifestyles of ancient dwellers.

Mount Popa will be the first area to be proclaimed a national geology park by the end of this year. After that the procedure will be expanded to other four areas. All the necesary researches have already been carried out with a managing committee for Mount Popa National Geology park formed. It consists mostly of the locals.

Mount Popa and the ancient capital of Bagan will be then combined into a Geo Park. This project is currently being discussed with the experts and UNESCO representatives. Bagan's status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site will be decided later this year in Azherbaijan. There are only a few differences between qualifying as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and as a Geo Park.
