Cambodian Cleanest Cities Named

Six cleanest cities in the country has been selected in this year's National Clean City competition. These cities will represent Cambodia and compete with other ASEAN cities in an all-ASEAN contest that will take place in Brunei in January next year.

This year, Daun Penh district of Phnom Penh, Kampot city, Kampong Cham city, Pursat city, Takhmao city, and Kampong Chhnang city are recognized as the cleanest cities in Cambodia.

Kampot received the highest marks – three romdul flowers to mark its achievement. Kampot's tourism department hopes that ranking the city as a safe and clean destination will help draw more visitors to the province. In 2018, Kampot province received about 1.6 million tourists, out of whom 10% were foreigners. The representatives of the Cambodia Chapter of the Pacific Asia Travel Association eye the victory of the cities like Takhmao and Kampong Chhnang a great chance for them to attract more attention as promising tourist destination with high tourism potential.

To prepare for the regional contest, a strategy was developed for each of the cities to further improve their performance and to meet the criteria to enter the Asean Clean City Competition. All winners should undergo a significant transformation to be ready for the Asean event.
It is not only the cleanness of the city and green spaces that are taken into account while deciding on the winner. On the national level, there are 70 criteria, and even more – 108 – in the regional competition. One of the most important ones that is evaluated is public safety.

Last year, three of Cambodian cities – Battambang, Kep and Siem Reap – received the ASEAN clean tourism award at an event held in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
