Thailand’s new Top-10 popular destinations in 2019 will be Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Nan, Buri Ram, Loei, Roi Et, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phitsanulok, Narathiwat and Ubon Ratchathani. In 2018, almost all of them showed an impressive 50%+ growth compared to 2017.
Sakon Nakhon and Nakhon Phanom are two of the most popular choices for autumn festivals celebrating the end of the Buddhist Lent with Wax Castle festival and Illuminated Boats festival both placed high on travellers' itineraries.
While Nan, Phitsanulok and Loei call nature lovers and adventure seekers with their natural attractions like Phu Kradueng, Don Sai's festival Phi Ta Khon held in summer remains one of the most spectacular events in Thailand's festival calendar drawing hordes to the province of Loei. The three provinces also attract tourists with non-traditional lodging options such as tentalows.
Buriram is ever popular thanks to the large-scale Khmer temple complex of Nang Rong and smaller satellite temples, and Roi Et becomes the epicentre of celebration during the annual rocket festival. Ubon Ratchathani, often overlooked by foreign visitors, boasts a wealth of natural attractions – from the unique Sam Phan Bok canyon to the Emeral Triangle area – as well as an incomparable variety of wats throughout the province.
The southern provinces of Nakhon Si Thammarat and Narathiwat offer an insigtful look into the southern culture with local cuisine being one of the most important selling points.
