Cu Nam – from a Military Station to Tourism Village

Once a military station and one-night halt for Vietnamese soldiers heading southwards, today Cu Nam village in Bo Trach district of the central province of Quang Binh has become a renowned international tourist destination.

While many local elders still remember the days when Cu Nam was a one-night village and all the villagers worked hard to help soldiers giving them food and shelter, what tourists visiting Cu Nam see today is an idyllic village set amid picturesque natural landscape which gives visitors the taste of real rural life of Central Vietnam, with bountiful rice paddies, farmers in pointed straw hats and water buffalos.

In 2008, the first farmstay was opened in the village and since then several other local households joined the club offering tourists a variety of daily farm activities – from feeding ducks to planting rice during the season. The world famous Son Doong cave, which is also considered the largest cave on the planet and located in the Phong Nha- Ke Bang National Park, is easily reached from the village as a day tour, too.

Quang Binh Province’s Department of Tourism feels confident that Cu Nam village will go on attracting tourists, both local and foreign thanks to its beautiful natural landscapes, unique culture and traditions, and friendly, hospitable and sociable locals.
