Oh No! Maya Bay Remains Closed

The picturesque Maya Bay, the cult setting of the Leonardo diCaprio's 'The Beach' movie, which has been temporarily closed for rehabilitation of marine life this June, will probably remain closed longer than expected.

The Krabi national park’s 25-strong advisory committee chaired by the provincial governor suggested to prolong the closure period at least for one month, till October, 31. It will allow more time for better rehabilitation of the coral reefs and mangrove forests. Another reason to keep the Maya Bay on the popular Koh Phi Phi island, Krabi province, Thailand, closed is weather conditions as stormy seas make visiting the bay unsafe for tourists. The initiative has found support of National park chief who also believes that the extension of the closure period will be beneficial both for the environment and eventually for visitors.

It is the first time the Maya Bay has been closed for the monsoon season while in general the practice of closing local attractions for the off-season is not unknown in Thailand. Resorts on certain islands both in the Andaman Sea and in the Gulf shut down for May–October period with number of boats between islands and the mainland reduced significantly. Anyway, if Hat Noppharat Thara – Mu Koh Phi Phi National Park is on your bucket list, adjust your schedule accordingly to avoid disappointment.
