The Banaue Rice Terraces were recognized the World heritage site by UNESCO in 2001 but it was not until 2012 when ther finally were removed from the World Heritage in Danger list. Currently the status of the terraces became questionable once again. About 600 hectars of land occupied by the terraces are now abandoned and not cultivated what has already caused considerable deterioration of the site. Farmers have moved to cities leaving their land plots unattended. The city government is trying to increase the pulic's awareness and encourage people to participate in initiatives aimed at saving the landmark.
One of such initiatives is the Banaue International Music Composition Competition with the final scheduled for July, 25th. The competition is a great chance for public to support the landmark showing their involvement. At the same time the government has worked out a plan for stonewalling the terraces worth PHP200 million. The work is due to srat in September this year.
