Laos to open military site for tourists in Plain of Jars province

Administrators in the Xiangkhouang Province of Laos say they plan to reopen a former mountain military base as a tourist attraction. Provincial tourism director Vongsa Duangthongla told reporters Mt Phou Kout will be a fitting complement to the renowned Plain of Jars.

The mountain’s elevated location made it strategically important in the War for Independence and it was the setting for numerous skirmishes. During the struggles it garnered the nickname of Iron Top Mount.

The director said the province was going to improve infrastructure at Phou Kout as well as launch a promotional campaign ahead of next year’s Visit Laos Year and its staging of the national sports games. The province has already improved the access road and will set up an interactive map onsite.

Phou Kout and the state capital of Phonsavanh are 30km apart. Phonsavanh is a little over 400kms from Vientiane. Only intrepid travellers make the trip as roads between the two cities are not in very good condition.

12GO ASIA does provide ticketing service for routes between Vientiane, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang. Mini-buses are an option from the latter to Phonsavanh.
