Bangkok Skytrain operator signs off on purchase of rolling stock

The operator of Bangkok’s Skytrain lines has just finalised an agreement on the purchase of new trains. Bangkok Mass Transit System Public Company Limited (BTS) says it is splitting the contract for the acquisition of 46 new trains between two manufacturers.

China’s Changchun Railway Vehicles Company will supply 24 of the new trains and the remainder will be produced by Siemens AG. The total cost of the two orders is THB11 billion. Each of the 46 trains will comprise four passenger carriages.

BTS chairperson Keeree Kanjanapas stated that by buying the trains, Skytrain would be able to cater to ever-increasing demand for its services for the next decade at least. Skytrain trains run on two lines in Bangkok which are the Dark Green and Light Green on urban train maps.

The Light Green follows a route from Mo Chit to Siam and down Sukhumvit Road to Bearing. The other line runs from National Stadium Station, through the interchange station at Siam and currently terminates at Wongwian Yai. The latter is being extended and the new trains are expected to give enhanced frequencies once it opens.
