CEO John Guiry explained that the service could initially be operated by using something similar to trams on the tracks that run from Phnom Penh Central Station to the airport. He continued by saying that establishing the link would only require constructing an additional short stretch of tracks.
Mr Guiry noted that the cost would not be high and Royal Railways would be prepared to fund it. He finished off by saying that the company expected to finish its viability study within the next six weeks and would then announce a decision.
Royal Railways has a 30-year franchise to operate Cambodia’s trains. It recently inaugurated the first passenger train service to run in the country since 2009. Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville trains run every weekend, but there are plans afoot to add extra train services to this destination plus Poipet on the Thai border.

Cambodia’s train operator is currently evaluating the feasibility of establishing a rail link to Phnom Penh International Airport. Royal Railways currently operates trains on the nation’s one-route network and its CEO says that if the project goes ahead it could use existing tracks.
