Weather forecasters warn of more storms for upper Thailand

Thailand’s Meteorological Department has issued a warning saying that storms are expected to sweep across the upper regions of Thailand. The alert states that provinces all the way up from Nakhon Ratchasima to Lamphun and Chiang Rai and across to Nong Khai will be hit by strong winds and rainstorms over the next few days.

The department explained that soaring summer temperatures were the cause of the scattered storms the north and northeastern areas of Thailand have experienced over the past week. Temperatures are still way over the 35°C mark and storms are a distinct likelihood.

The Meteorological Department says heavy winds can be dangerous and reminded people to stay away from high advertising hoardings and any other structures which looked unsafe. Storms also bring thunder and lightning. The department noted that big trees were definitely not the place to shelter from rain and lightning.

Two farmers and a youngster were killed in eastern Roi Et Province yesterday. Police investigators say the three took shelter from a summer storm in a lean-to with a corrugated metal roof under a lofty tree. The investigators say it looked like lightning struck the tree and the lean-to’s roof.
