To commemorate the occasion, King Bhumibol, or his nominated delegates, stages a merit making ceremony at the Emerald Buddha Temple in Bangkok. This evening sees the start of a long holiday weekend in Thailand during which banks, government and immigration offices are closed. The 5 May is Coronation Day in the country and marks the 66th anniversary of the day King Bhumibol Adulyadej officially ascended the throne in 1950.
