Pattaya Ocean Marina to stage youth yachting regatta this weekend

Tomorrow sees the start of Pattaya’s annual youth sailing regatta at the Thai resort’s Ocean Marina Yacht Club. The organisers of the Thailand Optimist National Championships say that around 150 young yachting enthusiasts have registered to compete in the 41st event in the series.

Since its inception, the Optimist National Championships has evolved into one of Southeast Asia’s top sailing events for youngsters. As well as plentiful Thai entrants, the 2016 championships will include nationals from neighbouring Malaysia in addition to Indonesia, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Race heats are staged in the seas close to the Ocean Marina. The Yacht Racing Association of Thailand is managing the event and also providing officiating judges. The junior championships are seen as a training ground for future Asian Games and Olympic sailing event competitors. Several former competitors, including Noppakao Poonpat, have since starred in senior yacht competitions.

The Ocean Marina junior yachting regatta will run between Saturday 30 April and Monday 2 May. People heading down to Pattaya or Jomtien for the event and looking for convenience when buying travel tickets will find 12GO ASIA the optimum choice.
