This contract covers the construction of and supply of rolling stock for the new Red Line from Rangsit to Bang Sue. The building section of the deal includes the track, traction mechanisms, electric installations, signalling and the development of automated ticket-issuing machines.
The contract is worth THB32.4 billion and the rail service is due to be completed in four years. The Red Line will be 26kms long and aimed at commuters with a projected daily passenger throughput of 450,000 once it is fully operational. Services will have 10 stops en route and these include the station opposite Don Muang Airport.
Bang Sue and Rangsit are both stops for trains from Bangkok to the north and northeastern regions of Thailand. The blueprint for the Red Line sees it running alongside the current tracks. Planners say the new line will help alleviate traffic congestion and overcrowded trains in northern Bangkok.

A senior Thai government official presided over the official signing of a contract for infrastructure on a brand new Bangkok rail line earlier this week. Deputy transport minister Aomsin Sheewaruek looked on as State Railway of Thailand and Japan’s MHSC Consortium representatives signed the contract.
