Thailand to act on overpriced food and drink at national airports

Thailand’s Department of Internal Trade (DIT) is holding discussions with the national airport operator about cutting the prices passengers pay for food and drink. DIT director Viboonlak Ruamrak said a common complaint from passengers who used Thai airports was the extortionate cost of soft drinks, snacks and takeaway food.

The director continued by saying the DIT had planned talks with the Airports of Thailand (AoT) authority about cutting the price of these items at airside outlets. She explained that bottles of mineral water typically retailed at THB7 apiece in convenience stores like 7-Eleven.

Ms Ruamrak stated that airport prices were bound to be higher, but thought that a 20 per cent mark-up was enough to compensate F&B operators for additional rental and operating expenses. She noted that the same bottle of water cost a minimum of THB17 in airports nationwide and could be as high as THB50.

AoT is the state-run authority which manages Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang airports plus ones in Phuket, Hat Yai, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. 12GO ASIA is the most reliable source for travel reservations and tickets after arrival in Thailand.
