Uber inaugurates debut global motorbike taxi service in Bangkok

Global taxi provider Uber yesterday inaugurated its debut service on two wheels in Bangkok. The taxi provider launched UberMOTO and in a press release said commuters and tourists will now be able to book motorcycle taxis in the same way that they do taxis.

UberMOTO is a sub-app of the main Uber app for Thailand. By setting up a Uber account and then logging in, passengers can request a moto-taxi by following a few simple instructions. The app confirms the booking. It then displays the moto-cabbie’s name and motorcycle registration-plate number and the estimated time of arrival.

In its statement, Uber said its riders were subject to the same background checks that drivers of regular four-wheeled taxis were. They also have to offer passengers a crash helmet.

The flag fare for a UberMOTO moto-taxi is THB10. Passengers then pay THB3.5 for each kilometre travelled and THB0.85 for each minute of the journey. At the end of their trip, passengers have the choice of cash or credit card for payment.

Uber’s statement noted that the UberMOTO Bangkok service is a trial in a programme that could see the same options launched in cities with major traffic congestion issues. Once the service becomes better established, arriving tourists should be able to book moto-taxis from Bangkok’s bus and train stations to their final destinations.
