Strawberry festival scheduled for north Chiang Mai district

Chiang Mai’s annual Strawberry Festival is once again scheduled to take place in the district of Samoeng. The 15th in the series is being staged on the grounds of the local council office between 11 and 14 February.

The happening celebrates the history of the strawberry in this region of Northern Thailand. A spokesperson for the district office said the event would feature all the usual activities including beauty pageants and parade floats bedecked with flowers and strawberry-shaped garlands. On Valentine’s Day, couples are offered the chance of having their wedding ceremonies themed on strawberries.

Samoeng is in the mountains and around 60kms west of downtown Chiang Mai. It is at the heart of the 10 main strawberry producing districts in the region. The total area of the strawberry farms is 2,200 acres and they grow about 13,000 tons of strawberries every year.

The strawberry fest is a good reason to travel the aptly-named Samoeng Loop, but there are other attractions too. The chief ones are soaking up the ambience of an unspoilt rural setting and walking through local markets. Other key draws are the Pang Da Royal Agricultural Station and the hot springs at Pong Kwao.
