Winds and waves up to four metres high have caused rough seas for the past five days in the Andaman region of southern Thailand. Some fishing trawlers had ventured out yesterday morning when the seas appeared calmer, but they stayed fairly close to shore and headed back to port at the first sign of high waves.
Two days ago, a Thai naval rescued the seven crew members of a Myanmar cargo freighter after it foundered in heavy seas 180kms from Phuket. The navy vessel transported the rescued crew to Phuket where medical professionals reported they were none the worse for their ordeal.
Andaman Marine Office officials say the seas are currently too rough for small boats. They advised skippers of fishing vessels and dive craft to check the National Meteorological Department’s updates for the region before putting out to sea.
