Dreaming abbot locates site of long lost Buddha statue head

The recurring dreams of a Thai temple abbot have led to the discovery of a long-lost head from a revered Buddha statue. The ordained monk of a temple in Suphan Buri Province dreamt about the statue head nine times before discussing it with local residents.

Phra Varavut Thitmetho told them he had dreamt the head of an ancient Buddha state was hidden by a pond in Don Pru Temple’s grounds. At the end of last month, residents and monks decided to test the veracity of the dreams and brought in a mechanical digger.

Five metres below ground level at the temple they struck pay dirt and unearthed the gold covered head which historians say is about three centuries old. Phra Varavut said that the head was 40 centimetres high and was re-ordained at the temple.

He continued by saying that the day after the consecration ceremony was held, the pond which had kept the statue’s secret for so long inexplicably turned green. Buddhists living in Suphan Buri Province and other nearby locations including Bangkok have been coming to Don Pru in droves to see the statue head over the past 10 days.
