He added that the THB40 million project still needed to be presented to Karon residents so they could have the final say in the matter. The original proposal was to build the facility in Nai Harn, but a series of public hearings saw residents reject it.
The first proposal for Nai Harn would have required the developers to cut down 40 mature pine trees on prime beachfront land. Governor Tipayapongtada said his team had learned lessons from the scheme’s rejection, but were keen to see the museum built on the island.
He noted that if a suitable site was not found by 31 March the THB40 million budget allocation would be cancelled by the Tourism Ministry. If the museum is finally built it will house exhibits, photographs and artefacts related to films shot on location in Thailand.
Classic James Bond films Tomorrow Never Dies and The Man with the Golden Gun were partially filmed in Thailand. The Beach and the Hangover II are among other noted Thai productions.
