Thai rail firm to close Bangkok station for bike rally

Thailand’s national rail operator has announced the closure of Bangkok’s main railway station for this coming Friday. The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is closing Hua Lampong Station to allow the 100,000 cyclists who have registered for Bike for Dad unrestricted use of roads around the facility.

SRT spokesperson Thanongsak Pongprasert told media reporters that between the hours of 12:00 and 20:00 passengers will have to board and alight from trains at the stations of Bang Sue or Makkasan. SRT workers will lay metal sheeting across tracks leading out from Hua Lampong to ensure the safety of cyclists.

Bike for Dad is being staged in honour of King Bhumibol’s birthday. The revered Thai monarch celebrated his milestone 88th birthday last Saturday. Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn is set to head up the bike rally around the streets of central Bangkok.

Organisers say the circuit is 29 kilometres long and hope that 99,999 riders will eventually take part. Bangkok’s governor, Sukhumbhand Paribatra, says extra security personnel and traffic police will be on hand to ensure the rally proceeds smoothly.

The rally will disrupt traffic in Bangkok all day on 11 December and traffic police say travellers heading for other train stations or bus terminals need to allow extra time to get there. 12GO ASIA offers travel tickets from Bangkok terminals to locations throughout Thailand.
