New Yangon aquarium set to accept first visitors in 2016

An aquarium complex currently under construction in Yangon will add another jewel to Myanmar’s tourism crown when it opens in 2016. The structure is being built on a five-acre site on Natmauk Road in the environs of the city’s Kandawgyi Lake.

News outlets in Yangon reported that the main building is almost three storeys high. It will be stocked with indigenous sea and fresh water species as well as other marine creatures sourced from around the world.

When it opens, the aquarium will have a maximum visitor capacity of 3,000 per day. Leading Southeast Asian architectural and engineering consultants, Singapore-based Surbana, designed the complex. The national Fisheries Department and the Myanmar Aquarium Company are collaborating on construction.

Kandawgyi Lake is north of central Yangon. The lake is artificial and was created during the British colonial era. It was formerly known as the Great Royal Lake. The key tourism draws of Shwedagon Pagoda, Yangon Zoo, Bogyoke Park, Karaweik Hall and Ngahtatgyi Pagoda are all within easy reach of Kandawgyi Lake.
