Wild elephants force motorcyclist off bike in Khao Yai

Elephants upset by the sound of motorcycles in one of Thailand’s biggest national parks forced one unlucky rider off his machine late last week. The driver of a car following the motorcyclist through Khao Yai National Park captured the whole incident on his dashboard camera and posted the images up online.

The video shows the motorcyclist slowing to go around the pachyderms. They didn’t want to move and made a slow charge at the motorcycle before the rider jumped off. As soon as he got off the man turned and faced the elephants and performed a wai by pressing the palms of his hands together in apology for upsetting them.

The man then backed slowly into the forest on the side of road and waited for the elephants to go away. Once the belligerent beasts had lumbered away the man emerged and quickly got on his motorcycle before speeding away.

Khao Yai rangers say the elephants were already annoyed as a group of motorcyclists had gone thundering past a few minutes beforehand. Khao Yai linked to the YouTube video on its Facebook page and posted a note warning that motorcycles needed to be prohibited from the park’s roads before something serious happened.
