Despite the valiant efforts of the crews of the 10 fire engines which attended the fire, the structure’s iconic tower and the annexes adjoining it were burnt to cinders. Initial inspections of the smoking ruins point to a short circuit in the electricity supply, but investigators have so far not released an official report.
Fire officers say the building burnt down quickly because it was teakwood and also winds blowing at the time increased the intensity of the flames. The fire took place before the official opening time and as a result nobody was on the premises.
The museum with its lofty Burmese-style multi-tiered roofs was built at a cost of THB12 million 10 years ago. It housed exhibits and displays themed on local hilltribes like the Karen and the Hmong as well as a shop selling OTOP handicraft products.

A fire at a heritage Thai museum in Mae Sariang completely destroyed the structure early on Sunday morning. The blaze broke out a little after 06:00 and local residents immediately called the fire brigade.
