Myanmar sets sights on UNESCO listing for Inle Lake

Myanmar’s Ministry of Culture has kicked off the process of applying for UNESCO World Heritage Status for Inle Lake. The ministry had already begun the process late last year by assessing the iconic lake’s natural and cultural draws and their relevance to UNESCO criteria.

Daw Nandar Moon is attached to an ASEAN community office. He told media reporters in the country the ministry had now expanded its inventory to the traditional industries of boat construction and fishing plus pottery and silverware making.

Four villages have traditionally been involved with these industries and include Tae Yar Ma. Although a ministry source says the register for the application is well under way, according to UNESCO’s requirements quite a lot still needs to be done.

UNESCO bases its requirements for inclusion on the World Heritage Site List on five main categories. The first of these is craftsmanship and two others are for knowledge together with its application and festivals and traditional rites.

The fourth area covers everything connected to performing arts and the last is language and its historic origins. Inle is about four hours’ drive from Mandalay and one of the most visited locations in Myanmar. A boat trip with the serene waters and a backdrop of waterside villages raised on stilts is a surreal experience.
