Broken down train disrupts Bangkok MRT services

A broken down train caused major disruption on Bangkok’s underground rail system this morning. A spokesperson for Bangkok’s Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT) said the engines on one of its trains failed at Bang Sue Station at 09:00.

The statement continued by saying engineers utilised another train to haul the broken down one back to the maintenance depot. The statement finished off by saying that it took a little over 30 minutes to restore services to normal.

Commuters at stations along the MRT took to social media and complained that platforms and stations were packed with people waiting for trains. The MRT system in Bangkok currently comprises one 20km-long dual-track line which runs from Bang Sue to Hua Lamphong mainline railway station.

Officially called the Chaloem Ratchamongkhon Line, it is usually referred to as the Blue Line. The line opened in 2004 and is now used by an average of 250,000 passengers every day. Ongoing construction work will eventually lead to it being turned into a circular line going around central Bangkok.
