Heavy rain in Thailand to last a few more days

Thailand’s meteorological division has forecast that the heavy rainfall the nation is experiencing will last a few days longer. Although the forecasters say tropical storm Vamco has diminished in power and been re-classified as a depression, it is not yet a spent force.

Since making landfall in Vietnam a few days ago, Vamco has caused torrential downpours and flooding right across Southeast Asia. The forecast predicts more heavy rain in most parts of Thailand. It noted that cities and areas such as Nakhon Ratchasima, Trat, Chonburi, Pattaya, Ranong, Phang Nga and Phuket might flood.

The storms will also trigger heavy seas in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea. Vamco has already caused the cancellation or delay of ferries to islands such as Phi Phi and Koh Samui. The forecast says problems with ferry timetables are likely to continue until the storms burn out.

The meteorological division says small boats and fishing vessels should stay in port while waves are so high. Flash floods have already washed away larger trees and inundated villages and towns. The problems are not only limited to flooding as gale-force winds blew the roofs off 40 houses in a town in Trang Province.
