Police nab pickpockets working Suvarnabhumi airport trains

Bangkok’s tourist police have announced the arrest of three people alleged to have pick-pocketed passengers on Suvarnabhumi airport trains. At a media briefing yesterday, assistant-superintendant Achayon Kraithong stated that the trio were Chinese nationals and they were arrested at the train station on the lower level of Bangkok’s main airport.

He continued by saying that police had started searching for pickpockets on Airport Link services after receiving a complaint from a passenger. An unidentified Swedish traveller said he was robbed of items including THB20,000 in cash and his credit card on Monday.

The assistant-superintendant named the three arrested men as Bai Chengming, Feng Huafeng and Liu Xiaocheng. He said that when apprehended the three denied any wrongdoing. A subsequent search of their hotel rooms in the Ratchathewi District of Bangkok turned up some of the Swede’s stolen articles and other alleged stolen property.

At the press briefing, police officers displayed the articles. There was a total of THB180,000 in cash in banknotes from various countries plus a number of bank cards, a collection of smart phones and a carry-bag alleged to have belonged to one of the victims.

Officers also noted that on reviewing CCTV footage they saw an incident in which six people crowded around and pickpocketed one passenger. Tourism agencies say travellers using Suvarnabhumi Airport Link trains should hide their valuables and keep an eye on what is happening around them.
