The 150-year-old mansion and former residence of Luang Rajamaitrihas is situated in the town’s river embankment district. It has been lovingly restored and is now a joint museum and boutique hotel that authentically depicts the style and grandeur of the middle years of the 19th century.
Prior to the establishment’s grand opening ceremonies late last year, local people were given the chance of buying into their cultural heritage for just THB1,000. More than 500 residents chipped in and UNESCO noted in its statement on the award that the project had raised public awareness of preserving Chantaburi’s heritage for posterity.
The statement added that the restoration of Baan Luang Rajamaitri had helped turn Chantaburi Town into one of the region’s up and coming tourist destinations. The statement finished off by saying the restoration and new usage designation of the Sino-Portuguese architectural gem had been carried out well and was a prototype for other similar projects.

A historic museum-hotel in the eastern Thai town of Chantaburi has scooped up a UNESCO Cultural Heritage Preservation award. The Baan Luang Rajamaitri Historic Inn was one of four recipients of the coveted Awards of Merit for a community based conservation project.
