Thailand says security ramped up in Bangkok

Thailand’s government has released a statement saying it has increased security in Bangkok following a deadly bomb blast. A government spokesperson read the statement out at a press briefing yesterday. He said that uniformed and disguised security officers were patrolling key tourist and commercial locations in Bangkok and other major towns.

Sansern Kaewkamnerd continued by saying that the security personnel would be doing everything they could to ensure Thai citizens were able to go about their daily business without fear.  He said the same applied to foreign visitors and they could go shopping and sightseeing in a safe and pleasant environment.

He added that tourists, conference delegates or business travellers planning visits to Thailand could rest assured they would be treated to the country’s renowned smiles and hospitality. The statement was issued in the wake of a bombing at Bangkok's iconic Erawan Shrine.

A number of foreign visitors were among those who lost their lives. One hundred people were also hospitalised as a result of the explosion. Major-general Kaewkamnerd noted that investigations into the outrage were ongoing and hoped the bombers would be brought to justice in the near future.
