A bath in the rejuvenating waters of Sankamphaeng hot springs

Three major fault lines stretch across northern Thailand. They cover an area between Mae Chan and Chiang Rai and then southwest through Chiang Mai to Lampang and Thoen. These fault lines are the driving force behind hot springs in this region of the country. Some of the notable hot springs are Pong Phra Bat Hot near Chiang Rai, Fang and Sankamphaeng.

There are two hot springs resorts at Sankamphaeng. The majority of visitors use the one operated by the local government. This facility has a spa water swimming pool, spa baths and group tubs. There is also a tub right next to the geysers where visitors can boil eggs sold at kiosks onsite.

Pong Phra Bat Hot Springs are only a few kilometres outside Chiang Rai and can be reached by bicycle. Those who don’t want to cycle in the hot sun can take either a taxi or a tuktuk, or join a group tour. Fang has a couple of hot springs and the ones in Doi Pa Hom Pok National Park tend to attract the most visitors. They are a fair distance from Fang, but often included on tours between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.
