Krabi, Phi Phi, Phuket face wet and windy weekend

The weekend weather forecast for Thailand’s Andaman Sea coastal region is heavy rain and strong winds. Meteorologists say the forecast for the region surrounding Krabi, Koh Phi Phi and Phuket is long intervals of heavy rain and gales of up to 45kph.

They say the storms are likely to continue until late Sunday when they are expected to ease off somewhat. The meteorological department also warned tourists that conditions at sea will not be suitable for small boats and they should not even entertain the idea of taking daytrips to smaller islands in the region such as Koh Racha or Koh Ngai on one.

One weatherman noted that rain and winds are par for the course at this time of the year as it is the middle of the annual monsoon season. Even experienced mariners have encountered problems during the current bad weather.

The crew of a fishing trawler looking for squid plucked the crew of a sinking barge from the sea seven miles off the coast of Krabi yesterday. The captain told his rescuers that he and his crew were transporting construction gear from Ao Nang to Koh Phi Phi when the barge started to founder.
