Vietnam to develop islet near Phu Quoc Island

Provincial authorities in Kien Giang confirmed this week they have signed off on a project to develop the islet of Hon Thom. The isle is located to the south of Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island and part of the development will see a cable-car system built to link the two.

At the press briefing announcing the project, a spokesperson stated that the SunGroup was putting up the lion’s share of the US$460 million needed to take it through to completion. He stated that the cable car will connect An Thoi, Phu Quoc’s second biggest town, to Hon Thom and will be seven kilometres long.

As well as the cable car hook-up, Hon Thom will also get a luxury hotel and a fully equipped entertainment complex. Under the terms of the agreement, the deadline for the first half of the project is in two years’ time.

An Thoi boasts fabulous beaches and among them are Khem and Sao. It is also home to the infamous French colonial and Vietnamese War era Coconut Tree Gaol. Phu Quoc Island is one of Vietnam’s fastest growing tourism hotspots and around 600,000 tourists visited in 2014.
