Flood warning for Mae Hong Son and northern Thailand

People living in provinces in Northern Thailand have been warned that there is a possibility of floods and landslides this week. Weather forecasters say this particularly affects those living close to rivers or other waterways or on the sides or at the foot of mountains.

The forecasters noted that residents needed to keep up to date on weather warnings so that they were ready to take any action needed to safeguard themselves and their belongings. In Mae Hong Son Province, torrential rain the night before last in Sop Moei District triggered mudslides.

In one of the district’s sub-zones some roads are impassable to four-wheeled vehicles and motorcycles are the only way in or out. At the nearby Mae Ngao National Park, chief-ranger Prachid Muangjaima said already swollen streams are being monitored by staff.

If the waters burst the banks of the streams it is likely to cause flash-flooding. The weather forecasters say other northern provinces where there is a chance of flooding are Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Nan. File photo courtesy of the Nation.
