Deadline to register Thai mobile phone SIM cards approaching

The six month grace period to register mobile telephone SIM cards in Thailand expires on Friday. In January, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) stated that SIM card owners would need to register their personal details by 31 July 2015 or service would be suspended.

The statement noted that SIM cards would still be valid after the deadline, but users would not be able to make telephone calls or access their internet data packages. The statement noted that owners would still be able to retrieve incoming text message.

The NBTC said SIM card owners could register their cards at its own service offices or outlets of their particular network provider. The main mobile service providers in Thailand are AIS, DTAC and True.

The providers have booths or shops in many of the major stores in the country and these include Big C and Tesco Lotus. Foreign nationals need their passports and SIM cards to complete the registration.
