The table was compiled by Travel & Leisure magazine and based on readers’ ratings in areas such as monuments, culture, shopping venues, cuisine and general friendliness of its people. Based on scores awarded by readers, Bangkok scored 88.91 points in comparison to Kyoto’s 91.22.
Charleston in the US state of South Carolina garnered second place with 89.84 points and Siem Reap in Cambodia, home to the fabled Angkor Wat temple complex, took 89.57 points and came third. Readers commended Bangkok for its pleasing fusion of contemporary and traditional culture and architecture, cuisine and lively atmosphere.
Bangkok has appeared in the Travel & Leisure top ten cities several times in recent years, but disappeared from it last year with travel writers blaming ongoing civil unrest. A coup d’état took place more than one year ago and Thailand is now stable again and regaining its rightful position among the world’s preferred holiday destinations.
