Journeying to the historic Thai kingdom of Sukhothai

Sukhothai Historical Park is one of Thailand’s most iconic attractions and is located roughly midway between the capital of Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Ruined pagodas, temples, chedis and statues in the park are up to 800 years old and the final traces of the ancient Kingdom of Sukhothai.

The historical park is about 12kms from the modern town of Sukhothai. The two are linked by frequent songthaew shared taxis during the daytime. Tuk-tuks are vailable for the trip, but are not as cheap. Sukhothai has bus services from Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phitsanulok and Mae Sot

Journey times from Bangkok and Chiang Mai vary with the class of bus, but should be around four hours. There is no train station in Sukhothai and the nearest one on a main line is at Phitsanulok. The bus trip from Phitsanulok to Sukhothai is about one hour.

For many travellers and history buffs, Sukhothai is an unmissable destination. People wishing to travel overland between Bangkok and northern Thailand will also find Sukhothai breaks the journey up nicely. 12G0 Asia takes the pain out of buying travel tickets with an expedient online booking service.
