Mawlamyine Myanmar – Best Places to Eat
As with accommodation in Mawlamyine, food and drink options tend to be clustered around the waterfront, with the majority located on Strand Road. This is a long road, winding its way down the waterside, and is bustling with cafes and restaurants that are mainly populated by locals but also popular with tourists and other visitors to the area.
Dishes to order
Most places focus on traditional and local Myanmar cuisine, with popular options including curry and teashops. At almost any of the local restaurants you can expect to find all of the usual traditional Burmese meals, most of which are delicious and packed with flavour. Tealeaf salads are always a popular option, and there are also plenty of curries of varying spiciness available, together with fish dishes.
Night market
If you’re on a tighter budget or fancy some street food you may want to try the Mawlamyine night market. This runs on a daily basis and has many stalls offering all the usual street food delicacies. Expect to see every part of the animal grilled and served on skewers, as well as veggie options and vats of curry and other tasty dishes. Here you can enjoy eating like a local and can get a delicious and filling dinner for just a couple of dollars.
Burmese Food
For traditional Burmese food there are many restaurants that you can’t go wrong with. Riverview restaurant is in the same area as My City Cafe with a far more extensive menu and serves many local dishes that are cooked to order, as well as offering great riverside views. You’ll find many people head here for an early evening drink to enjoy the sunset and jovial atmosphere in this part of the city.
Mya Than Lwin is more basic and offers very reasonably priced food, it’s popular with locals and has a range of Burmese Mon dishes to choose from.
The chain restaurant YKKO can be found in Yangon and other parts of Myanmar and there is also an outlet in Mawlamyine. It serves mainly Burmese food, but does also have a few western, thai and chinese style dishes on the menu. As a chain restaurant it is a little more expensive, but still a reasonably priced option for dinner.
Western & International Food
If you prefer international food, then there are still a number of places that offer pizza, pasta and burgers to cater to western tastes. One such place is My City Cafe which is located near to Myoma Jetty, which is a popular food spot. This serves juices, coffees etc as well as standard western food which is pretty good quality and reasonably priced.
There are also some options available for those who fancy trying different food. Myanmar’s proximity to China and India means that these cuisines are also popular and most places feature both Chinese and Indian restaurants and cafes that serve traditional dishes at reasonable prices.
For Chinese food in Mawlamyine try the Nadih Laine restaurant that’s situated near to Dawei Jetty (still on Strand Road), and has plenty of choice for a mid range budget. If Indian takes your fancy then there is also an Indian restaurant locally off Bogyoke Road called Mi Cho, where you can try a tasty biriyani or any number of other dahls and curries. Again, prices are low and dishes are high on flavour, making it a great choice for something slightly different.
