Authentic Kochi experience
Looking for adventure? Most tourists spend at least one night on a Kettuvallam (houseboat) for the quintessential Kochi experience. Kettuvallams are large, slow barges with air-conditioned sleeping areas, Western-style toilets, decks for outdoor lounging, and living/dining rooms that are open on three sides for panoramic views. Your private staff will set out burning coals at night to keep the mosquitos away. You can rough it without air conditioning for about INR5000.
If you prefer to chill, splurge with air conditioning for around INR10000. Costs should cover freshly-cooked food and drinks made by an on-board cook. Be prepared to pay more from December until the end of January, which is the peak time for staying in a houseboat because the weather is cool and dry. Houseboats are available year round, though. Cruising between March and May? Get air conditioning! Shout out to our rock star guide, Peter, at Carnival Tours & Travels. Starting at INR10800.
